Introduction to Japanese Fabric Marbling with Natalie Stopka
In this class students will explore suminagashi, the Japanese craft of marbling by floating ink on the surface of water. As we make marbled prints on fabric with natural materials, we’ll discuss the ideology shaping this historic technique. Students will develop a suite of patterns using the natural forces of wind, vibration, and surface tension, and leave with the skills to continue exploring on their own. Natalie Stopka’s focus on creative processes is rooted in the materials and forces of the natural world. Drawing on diverse textile and bookbinding techniques, she creates unique objects that are utilitarian or purely artistic.
